Three Pears
This is a small study of pears. I didn't draw this out first but instead, "drew" it with the paintbrush and paint. It was an exercise in loosening up. It's still pretty realistic but for me, it's loose. Thanks to Don West for his suggestions on this one.

Three Pears on Red
Another study of pears. Again, this was not drawn out beforehand but rather, drawn with the paintbrush and paint. The red background had alcohol applied for a stripe-y kind of look. And again, thanks to Don West for his suggestions.

Mouse Hunting

A fast drawing of a cat using Prismacolor Markers. This was the first time I tried the Prismacolor and I loved them! This was done on 90 lb paper, approximately 5" x 7". Collection of the artist.

A Coy Giraffe A Coy Giraffe

Painted in watercolour on Arches Cold Pressed 140 lb paper, it's about 11" x 14". (It's a shame you can't see the blue on the side of his face - it really contrasts the warm oranges/browns nicely!) I lost count of all the layers of glazing it took to get the browns to what I wanted. Painting shapes, instead of painting what my brain was telling me to paint, was crucial in this painting.  This painting is in the 2007 Manresa Calendar.

Many thanks for the reference picture go to Connie van Winssen of Westbroek, The Netherlands.

A Cat Called Moose

My son has a cat called Moose.  (It's a long story about the name!)  He is the meanest, nastiest, crankiest old cat you could ever meet.  This painting is watercolour, painted on Fabriano Soft Pressed 300 lb paper.  Approx. 2.5" x 3.5".  Actually an 'art trading card', also known as ACEO.  Don't let the sweet face fool you!  Artist's collection.  (Second version in private collection, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada.)

Collander and Eggs Collander and Eggs

From my Kitchen Affairs Series. Watercolour.  Painted on Arches 300 lb Cold Pressed paper.  Approx. 11" x 14".  A small miniature art trading card was painted of this also.  Collection of the artist.

This painting was included in the 2008 Focus Art group's calendar.

Wedding Hydrangeas Wedding Hydrangeas

Second version of the hydrangeas painted as a wedding gift for my Mom and Stepfather, Jim. Sadly, Jim passed away in December of 2005, after a very short but happy marriage, and leaving a great void in my Mother's life. No one could have asked for a better step father.

This was on 1/4 sheet of Arches hot pressed paper. The leaves were painted over gesso. (Actually, the gessoed leaves were due to the mistake of leaving the masking fluid on the leaves too long and being unable to remove it. Not wanting to lose the already painted petals, I tried gesso-ing over it. I loved the result and will try a painting soon of the entire area painted over gesso.)
